Friday, all classes participated in our first Cafe READ of the year. This cafe simulation aims to show students what an “open mic” environment might look like, to give students a real audience for sharing their written works, and to give them an opportunity to speak under the pressure of a spotlight (it takes practice!).
All students could pick something to read from their composition notebooks, or they could read their persional bio-poems.
We discussed different “rules” for different environments: yelling and clapping at a ball game versus clapping at an assembly versus snapping in a cafe. For fun, we reviewed different types of coffehouse drinks. I evaluated each speaker’s volume while students practiced using the microphone with our portable PA system.
Thanks, Parents and Families for your support in giving your permission for students to have cocoa! It was a fun class period, and it was interesting to me to see which writing pieces students picked to read aloud.
Have a great weekend!
