After driving six hours, the concert was canceled.
This was a very commonly missed question on a recent quiz. What is wrong with the sentence above? Many of you thought nothing. Who is doing the driving in that sentence? The sentence doesn’t make the driver clear. In that sentence the “who is doing the driving” is dangling—not present in the sentence. The “who is doing the driving” is dangling so much the sentence makes it seem like the CONCERT was driving the car. 🙂
Here are a few ways you might fix a sentence l ike that:
1. After Mama and Freddie drove six hours, the concert was canceled.
2. I heard the concert was canceled after I drove six hours.
3. Eddie Van Halen canceled the concert after I drove six hours.
In all of the three sentence above, the driver is very clear and is not “dangling” somewhere outside the sentence for the reader to determine on his or her own.
